It is a strange moment when you sit in front of a screen with a blank page in some IDE (a tool programmers use to write code) and know that the moment your fingers hit the keys you are beginning a journey that is going to take months, maybe years, to finish. It’s exciting because of the opportunity but also daunting because the road ahead is fraught with potholes, thorny branches and like the undrawn maps of yore, ‘there be monsters here’. Like anything worth doing, it doesn’t start with fingers on a keyboard, it starts with a life filled with experience that leads you to a mind worm. The mind worm keeps running around and around and won’t give you any rest and for us the mind work was this… “What if we told a better story?”

WHAT IF WE TOLD A BETTER STORY

What would it even mean to tell a better story? Not just for us, but the whole church. We don’t know… we aren’t that smart, or maybe just smart enough to know that it would be stupid to make assumptions about what is good for everyone. What we did know though is that any story worth telling about the church would have Jesus at the core of it. It would be gospel shaped and it would feature profoundly the whole church together, doing something great, in unity. We knew that we were going to have to solve for a bunch of problems that stood in the way of both that unity of the church and the supremacy of Christ in it, toward doing the work we are called to. So we started coding, knowing that whatever we came up with had to solve for a couple of things:

What would it even mean to tell a better story? Not just for us, but the whole church.

SOLVE FOR MIND, MONEY, MANPOWER

Every idea, every great enterprise, Christian or otherwise, requires 3 things. Mind, money and manpower. Any enterprise which struggles to find traction lacks one of these three things. You have to have the idea, a great concept which you intend to build or innovate around. There then has to be sufficient capital to make that idea a reality and finally the right people
or manpower to execute. Every great endeavour of the church requires these three things and we will build the tools to draw them together in one place. Imagine a single place where every Christian mission, missionary, church, church plant and every good endeavour of the church is funded, staffed and made visible. A place where every Christian endeavour is listed as a project that can be joined or funded. Every job and opening in the church is listed and filled. A single place for users to manage all their giving. A place where every one of those stories is told. This is the code we were writing and the story we were telling.

SOLVE FOR UNITY AND FOCUS

One of the great problems of the church as it has spread and sprawled throughout the world is a unity and focus problem. As the church has grown over the last 2000 years we have become more fragmented and divided when in fact for the cause of the gospel we should be unified and working towards common ends. This has lead to a lot of waste and exploitation of resources in the name of the gospel. Through the use of a AI, machine learning and good old fashioned match making, we will establish and create connections for collaboration of the church to achieve the common goals to avoid redundancy and waste while achieving larger goals with better outcomes, transforming villages, towns, cities and eventually whole regions through collaboration and consolidation of the work we do as individuals, churches and organisations, together as the church. This is the code we were writing and the story we were telling.

SOLVE FOR BHAGS (BIG HAIRY AUDACIOUS GOALS)

If Christians are giving $2.2 trillion annually+ , with a mandate to not only share the gospel, but also to love the marginalised, the widow, the orphan, the sojourner, to fight for the poor and combat injustice; while the World Health Organisation says that $53 billion would mitigate much of this suffering, we seem to have a disconnect. These problems are solvable problems and the church has not only the inherent motivation, but also the finances and manpower to solve these problems. Imagine if the church and the church alone was able to say “We fixed preventable disease, fixed world hunger, taught billions to read and gave them water to drink”. We think this can be a reality and where setting out to build the tools necessary to make it happen. This is the code we were writing and the story we were telling.

Imagine if the church and the church alone was able to say “We fixed preventable disease, fixed world hunger..."

SOLVE FOR TELLING THE BETTER STORY

One of the difficulties of the church (missionaries, projects et al) is telling its story globally and effectively either for the glory of God or the edification of the saints. What if these stories were as easy to tell as an Instagram post and as promotable as other social media forms, using embedded support buttons so people can follow and back projects they want to get updates on. In short photo/ video driven, easily browsable content. We knew the story telling problem was one we had to solve to tell the story of the church the world over all while connecting person by person, church by church, city by city, country by country, every Christian everywhere to the work and rejoice in it. This is the code we were writing and the story we were telling.

SOLVE THE DISTRIBUTION PROBLEM

Getting money and aid into the hands that need it and need to use it is remarkably expensive and convoluted. In many cases it is impossible as billions don’t have bank accounts which further propagates the poverty cycle. Couple this with insanely high inflation and lack of access to the bank stability (in over 1/2 the world) we take for granted and you have the recipe for indentured poverty, children being sold into debt bondage and worse. Could this be solved by bypassing banks altogether and using a network of churches for distribution? The block chain with churches as exchanges? Or establish a developing global digital banking system similar to Transferwise, Revolute or N26, but with terms favourable to the developing world as opposed to the west. A race to the bottom for the poorest 3 billion on the planet. Rather than high fees being the way it is capitalised, doing it by volume. To solve this we also might need to solve connectivity in some cases and the means for this digital commerce through distribution of smart phones and the like, creating an ecosystem layer of commerce in the developing world. This is a huge problem but if we weren’t going to address is and the many downstream problems it causes, who was ever going to? This is the code we were writing and the story we were telling.

Why are you reading this right now and not changing the world already!?

We aren’t done coding, designing, planning and dreaming yet, in fact we are only just getting started. We have great plans for King and Crown and great hope for the church. The only thing we need for this to work is each other (and a bunch of prayer, grace from God, and the Holy Spirit to do His jam). Changing the world starts with you, right now, using a simple tool to do incredible things in faith and love. So why are you reading this right now and not changing the world already!?!?!?
